As soon as I landed in Reykjavik and found wifi I saw I had a lot of messages from the photographer that I was supposed to travel with for the next weeks. It turned out that his flight was cancel and he was not gonna come. My plan to share a car with him was gone and for a while, I panicked. Then I remembered reading Iceland was one of the easiest and places to hitchhike, and I thought that would be a greater adventure. A few days after I met other travelers on a bar and although we were all strangers we decided to rent a car for a day and go explore. That’s how I got my first ride, from there on I waited next to glaciers, under the rain, or in beautiful locations. The shortest time I waited was 12 minutes and the longest an hour and 48 minutes.
After some days hitchhiking I got to stay for a few weeks with a local family who happened to run a tour company and know about a lot of really cool hidden places to visit! They not only took me on tours, but they also allowed me to use one of their cars while I was living with them which ironically changed the roles: now I was the one picking up hitchhikers on the road! A few weeks later I left their place and continue hitchhiking my way back to Reykjavik. I completed the ring road by exclusively by sharing cars with strangers. I have great memories from that time, it was a journey full of adventures, northern lights, stories shared with people I met by chance and breathtaking landscapes. I’m happy that I dared to stand on the side and be open to what can happen.
Iceland is felt like a photographer playground, the landscapes and the weather offer such a rich variety of subjects. Here are some of the photos I liked the most. A couple of them were featured on Sony Instagram feed.
